I Am Not a Witch (Rugano Nyoni, 2017)
This superb British-Zambian production about witchcraft isguaranteed to make you laugh and cry. In a remote African tribe, the young girl Shula (Maggie Mulubwa) is accused of being a witch. She is tied to a very long white ribbon and forced to work. She is told that she will turn into a goat in case she attempts to escape. You will laugh at the absurdity of a society that still oppresses and punishes women in such a primitive way. The accusations against Shula are frivolous, her exorcism clownish, her trial ludicrous. And you will cry at the tragic outcome. A profoundly lyrical and yet sordid reminder of the gripping power of cultural superstitions. Read DMovies’ review of I Am Not A Witch here.
