The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog
(Alfred Hitchcock, 1927) – featuring live music score
Our first film travels back in time almost 100 years to a London very different to the one we know right now, in what would become Alfred Hitchcock’s first commercial hit. A landlady (Marie Ault) and her husband (Arthur Chesney) take in a new lodger (Ivor Novello), and at first it all seems wonderful. Until they begin to suspect that the quiet and introspective man is a prolific killer terrorising East London girls. There is no shortage of jump scares in the unusually somber and strangely charming corners of the British capital. Based on the eponymous novel, The Lodger is inspired by the Jack the Ripper murders. You will instantly recognise the trademarks that eventually became associated with the Master of Suspense: murder, blondes and ambiguous suspects, in a film that is in no way inferior to his later Hollywood blockbusters.
A live music score performance will cater for tears, goosebumps and screams!
