Rocks (Sarah Gavron, 2020)

Girls of various religions and ethnic backgrounds rock East London, in this potent burst of social realism entirely made by women. Year 11 student Rocks (Bukky Bakray) staunchly defends her friend Sumaya (Kosar Ali) against bullies. She is left to care for her seven-year-old brother Emmanuel (D’angelou Osei Kissiedu) when her mum disappears, leaving a paltry sum of a money and a crumpled note. Few British films can claim the authenticity of Sarah Gavron’s third feature. But let’s not give the director all the credit. Rocks was a passionately collaborative effort, drawing on the skills and experiences of its young cast, many of them first time performers. Rocks won the Best Casting Bafta earlier this year.
